500 Runners & Boca Raton Sunset Rotary raise $20,000 for PAL!

The Boca Raton Police Athletic League welcomed 500 runners and nearly 100 volunteers early Saturday morning for a 6:30 am starter-pistol shot fired by Boca Raton’s new Police Chief, Dan Alexander to start the 6th Annual PAL Half-Marathon.  Runners braved the brisk morning on a 13 mile course which began on a closed A1A and snaked through Boca Raton neighborhoods, finishing at Spanish River Park.  Scott Colton, 43, finished first for men with a time of 1:15:24.4, and Heide Arguilles, 42, finished first for women with a time of 1:29:11.3. Results for all runners can be found on www.accuchiptiming.com.

The Boca Raton Sunset Rotary Club sponsored the event, as Rotarians cooked pancake breakfasts for everyone involved.  Club President, Barry Siegle stated that he was impressed with the turnout, as well as how much fun everyone had – even though it was hard for “Sunset” Rotarians to get up as early as 4 am! The Sunset Rotary Club’s sponsorship sales, along with runner’s registration fees generated more than $20,000.00 for PAL’s operations - providing gym facilities for area kids to spend time after school and on weekends with Police Officers as mentors and coaches.  CitiBank was particularly helpful as this year’s Title Sponsor, providing over 30 volunteers as part their corporate commitment to the first "Global Community Day," mobilizing tens of thousands of Citigroup volunteers in over 800 projects in more than 450 cities across 100 countries on November 18.  Boca Raton Police Athletlic League Director, Officer Sean Flynn thanked everyone who sponsored and participated on behalf of PAL’s kids, and hopes that all will return for next year’s event!   For more information on the Boca Raton Police Athletic League, contact Officer Sean Flynn at 561-239-1144.

The Boca Raton Sunset Rotary Club supports many Community Service Projects throughout Boca Raton, and is proud to support the 6th Annual PAL Half-Marathon.  For more information about The Boca Raton Sunset Rotary Club, contact Steve Thacker, Club Secretary at 561-350-6282, or visit the following website at www.bocasunsetrotary.org.

TEAM-UP FOR THE KIDS
OF BOCA RATON!

THIS JUST IN!  Thanks to everyone who helped get sponsors for this event - we raised almost $6,000 in cash and services as of this posting!  We particularly want to thank CitiBank, who stepped up to be the Title Sponsor this year!  Although the Registration Forms are in the mail (please download from menu at left!) there is still opportunity to sponsor and have your logo on the T-Shirts, and displayed at the event on November 18th.  Again, special Sunset Rotary Thanks to all our sponsors & CitiBank!

(original story) The Boca Raton Sunset Rotary Club has agreed to sponsor the Boca Raton Policeman's Athletic League (PAL) Half-Marathon on Saturday, November 18 in Spanish River Park.  Thanks go to Phil Lustig and Steve Thacker, who met with event coordinator Tom Vladmir of Runners Edge, and Officers Sean Flynn and Matt McGarry, Director of PAL who are very excited about Rotary's involvement with PAL,  a recreation-oriented juvenile crime prevention program that relies heavily on athletics and recreational activities to create and cement the bond between the police officers and the kid on the street.

The PAL Half-Marathon is six years old, but last year's event was canceled due to Hurricane Wilma.  1,000 runners are expected as this is the only half-marathon scheduled in the fall!  Never before has this event had a Sponsor, and the opportunity for Boca Raton Sunset Rotary to become it's benefactor on an ongoing basis is HUGE!

Melinda Atchison, Chairperson for the Club's Community Avenue of Service has agreed to focus on this event as it's primary fundraising activity for the year (thanks Melinda!!).

Club members need to begin selling the following Sponsorship's immediately as half of proceeds go to our Club's Charities, the rest goes to PAL!  Sponsor Forms can be downloaded and printed from this website.  The Sponsorship opportunities are as follows:

Bronze Medal: $250  Sponsor Table and Logo displayed at event and on 5,000 mailers

Silver Medal:  $500  Sponsor Table and Logo on back of 1,200 T-Shirts, 5,000 mailers

Gold Medal: $1,000 Sponsor Table/Tent, Logo on long-sleeve of 1,200 T-Shirts, 5,000 mailers

Title Sponsor: $5,000 Event Sponsor "Presents" Color Logo on Front of 1,200 T-Shirts, and all marketing materals, Sponsor Tent and Signage at the event, Sponsor stuffers in 5,000 mailers.

There can only be one Title and Gold sponsor, so please call Phil or Steve if you know of anyone that is interested.

Event day will be busy, as we need many volunteers to pass out water and serve breakfast to the runners.  This is a terrific opportunity for Boca Raton Sunset Rotary to become affiliated with a "Signature Event" in our community, so please participate in any way you can!

Boca Rotarians meet in Sweden and Denmark to celebrate, plan future efforts

When Rotary International recently convened its annual convention in Malmö, Sweden and Copenhagen, Denmark, Rotarians from 130 countries including several Boca Raton business leaders were there. Attorney Barry Siegel, financial planner Kris Sudan, swimming instructor Phil Lustig and Hirsch Architects' principals Ken & Shirley Hirsch spent a week meeting with Rotarians from around the globe to discuss their progress in Polio eradication, peace initiatives and the organization's wide-reaching humanitarian efforts.

Remarkable progress towards Rotary's goal of a Polio-free world

In the last year, two more countries were recently declared polio-free, leaving only four polio-endemic - Nigeria, India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Polio, an infectious disease that can cause paralysis and sometimes death, still strikes children, mainly under the age of five, in parts of Africa, Asia and the Middle East. The disease was eradicated from the Americas in 1994. As there is no cure for polio, the best protection is prevention. Rotary estimates that for as little as .60 cents worth of vaccine, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

"All children, no matter where they live, should be free from the threat of polio," said Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar, president of Rotary International and a Sweden native. Health experts agree that stopping the spread of polio can be done this year, except in Nigeria, where another year may be required to finish the job. Barry Siegel, a member of the Boca Raton Sunset chapter, echoed Stenhammar's comments. "We're anxious to bring this grim chapter in history to a close, so we can wind down our Polio eradication efforts and re-distribute those rsources to other global health, hunger, education and peace programs." The local chapters' efforts include both local and international programs, mostly funded by contributions from its members and carried out through a network of volunteers. Major corporations and celebrities such as Bill & Melinda Gates, Mia Farrow and Ted Turner have also stepped forward as vocal Rotary supporters.

In recent years, Rotary become a force to be reckoned with in the global health scene. When Rotary began its PolioPlus program in 1985, approximately 1,000 children were infected by this crippling disease every day. At the end of 2005, less than 2,000 children contracted polio all year, down from the 350,000 cases estimated in 125 countries in 1988. More than 1 million Rotary members have volunteered their time and personal resources to help immunize more than two billion children in 122 countries. Their partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF, has become a model for future public-private collaborations.

Rotary leaders foster goodwill in Middle Eastern countries at odds

Also on the agenda at the international convention was talk of the ground-breaking Indo-Pakistan Conference on Conflict Resolution and Peace, sponsored by Rotarians from the countries of India and Pakistan, which had taken place 2 weeks prior. Over 500 Rotarians, government officials and business leaders met in Islamabad June 2 to 4 to discuss improving relations following a long history of war, border skirmishes, and hostile relations. Among the fruits of the meeting were plans to establish a state-of-the-art blood bank in Karachi, Pakistan, and a vocational training institute in Delhi, India, with support from Rotarians in both countries. International youth exchange and scholarships were also high on the countries' list of plans to improve understanding and acceptance of each others' peoples. The event concluded with a peace walk to signify the start of the march to peace and prosperity.

Boca Raton expands program sponsoring life-saving surgery for third-world infants

One of the humanitarian efforts gaining steam here in South Florida is Rotary's Gift of Life program which helps families in third world countries obtain life-saving medical attention for their children. Jackson Memorial Hospital has made a verbal commitment to the Boca Sunset Club to donate heart surgeries and post-operative care for one child each year. So far, two children from the island of Trinidad have participated in the Boca-based program, which originated in New York in 1974. "Both of these children were infants with congential heart defects - basically death sentences in their native country where the level of care they needed is just not available," commented Sunset Rotarian Phil Lustig. "Travelling to the United States and paying for a hundred-thousand dollar surgery to them is not even a remote possibility, so Gift of Life is basically a life-saver." The Rotary Club in their home country sponsors the families' air travel, the Boca Sunset Rotary Club arranges for their expenses while here in Florida and the Ronald McDonald House provides lodging for child and mother. Over 8,000 children have been saved by Gift of Life since its inception and Boca Rotarians hope to gain more supporters as news of the program grows. The Club currently needs $5000 to sponsor its next beneficiary.

Rotary International is the world’s first and one of the largest volunteer service organizations with 1.2 million members in more than 160 countries. The Boca Raton Sunset chapter meets every Monday at 6 PM in the Premier Level of Muvico Palace 20 on Aiport Road. For more information call 954-419-2282.

 Medical Supply Delivery
Posted by : Douglas Heizer on Monday, January 16, 2006 - 12:04 PM

 by Steve Thacker

There is a long list of caring supporters that helped with the planning and delivery of the medical supplies, that were donated by Stone Medical Group, to where it was most needed; the St. Bernard Regional Medical Center in Chalmette, Louisiana. Even now it is still operating out of a trailer and tents in a Wal-Mart parking lot. Stone Medical Group of Boca Raton has long supported hurricane relief efforts all over South Florida and the Caribbean.
